Playdates, New Places, and New Playmates

I am officially a modern Mama. Since Duke doesn’t have any siblings his age, I made it a point recently to follow up with a mom from his school who had offered to have a playdate for her son and Duke. I had also met another mom from his school who has a son so recently I arranged for the 3 of us to get our boys together for Duke’s first official playdate with friends.

Given the Texas summer heat, we agreed an indoor playdate activity would be best. We tossed around a few ideas and landed on Chuck E Cheese based on location and the level of activity the boys would be able to engage in. I have not been to a Chuck E Cheese in many years and was not sure what to expect, but overall we had a great time. It was all of our first time there with our boys so it was cool to see the boys explore and play on the games.

At 2 and 3 years old, the boys are still so young they didn’t quite get the concept of playing together, but it was cool to watch them enjoy themselves and tire themselves out. Having this playdate got me thinking about other ideas for indoor places in the Houston area that would be great for our new crew to link up for a playdate. After a little research, I found a few interesting spots that I think would be worth checking out and have compiled them into a list below in case there are other moms in the Houston area also looking for activities to do with their kids.

#1. Kanga’s Indoor Playcenter

This spot is located in the Woodlands so we would need to pack a bag and gas up the car, but it looks like it would be worth the trip! It’s a multi-level indoor playground, is toddler friendly, has a café to get food, and has merry-go-rounds. They are open seven days a week and also have packages for birthday parties. Pricing is $14.99 for toddlers and $17.99 for kids 3 and older while adult entry is $6.00. Check out their website and photo gallery to get a better feel for what this playground has to offer but I think it’s pretty cool.

#2. Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center

So, am I the only one who didn’t know Fort Bend has a child discovery center that’s a project of the Children’s Museum of Houston? Based on the website, it reminds me so much of what I’ve heard about Houston’s Children’s Museum which is all only great things (it’s on our list too). They offer memberships which are also honored at the Children’s Museum of Houston in the Museum District and have offerings for children from birth to age 12. They are closed on Sunday & Monday and pricing is $15 for anyone one-year-old and older. They have an array of exhibits for kids from personal financial literacy to government and economics and also have a Tot Spot for children younger than 35 months. They do not offer food, but light refreshments are available for sale.

#3. Houston Toy Museum

Maybe it’s me, but a toy museum sounds so cool. The Houston Toy Museum has toys from the 1800s to the present day. Their exhibits provide background on not only the toys themselves but on who invented them as well as the artists behind the brands and designs. They offer memberships, have events, and kids pay their age for admission which is kinda cool for me since my child is only 2. They have an interactive play space for toddlers and activities for older kids. I’d recommend calling ahead and/or checking their website before visiting to ensure it’s open if you’re thinking of going but they are generally open from Tuesday-Sunday and closed on Mondays.

#4. Play Street Museum

Play Street Museum is a national chain that caters to children ages 8 and younger. The exhibits are educational, interactive, and designed to foster and encourage play among children. They have special events and host birthday parties, and for my Houston area peeps, they have locations in Cypress, Katy, Sugarland, and The Woodlands. At their Sugarland location, they offer playtime by reservation Monday-Friday. Admission is $14.00 per child ages 1-8. It’s kinda cool that children outside of this range can get in free if they are accompanied by a paying sibling. They offer free Wi-Fi and while food is not allowed in the play area, guests are welcome to bring in outside drinks.

I think this is a good list for starters and will keep looking for other cool (literally) things to do with Duke solo, or with our new playmate crew. In this Texas heat and with my regular appointments for a silk press, I’m glad there are options out there for nice indoor activities to do with young children. I hope anyone looking for fun things to do with their kids found this list helpful and please do let me know if you’ve been to any of these places or if you plan to check them out. Also, hit me up if there are places on your playdate list that I didn’t mention. Help a sista out, I’d love to hear from you!

Until next time…

XOXO,

Mrs. O
